Wargames Rules: WRG 1685–1845

First published in 1971 and significantly revised in 1979, these classic rules from the Wargames Research Group were revolutionary for their time. They were written to allow wargamers to replay even the largest battles from the horse and musket era. The rules incorporate an alternate move system and a reaction test system that serves as the main engine for controlling troop behaviour on the tabletop.

The system is comprehensive, featuring detailed mechanics for command and control, terrain generation, and varied weapon types. It uses a figure-to-man ratio of approximately 1:40 or 1:50, making it possible to recreate historical battles at a grand tactical level. While the core book includes specimen army lists for the Marlburian era, the Seven Years' War, and early Indian Wars, it is the supplement by Don McHugh that truly expands the system for the SYW enthusiast.

The Seven Years War Army Lists supplement provides 12 pages of rule adaptations specific to the period, followed by 15 detailed army lists for the various combatants. This ensures that the unique tactical nuances of the era are properly reflected within the robust WRG framework.
