The Bohemian Landscape: Building Lobositz in 6mm

As the Third Silesian War project gathers pace, my focus has shifted to the first major encounter: the Battle of Lobositz (1st October 1756). To truly capture the scale of this engagement in 6mm, the terrain needs to be as impressive as the Baccus regiments that will be fighting over it.

I am utilising the "Big Battalions" range from Total Battle Miniatures. These 6mm components are designed with a specific footprint that provides a concentrated, built-up look without sprawling across the entire table—perfect for keeping the focus on the movement of our 24-figure infantry battalions.

The Settlement Expansion Plan

This is an evolving post as I acquire and paint the various settlements and geographical features required for the Lobositz map.

Historical Location TBM Footprint Model Status
Welhotta Limal (130mm x 120mm) Acquired
Lobositz Plancenoit Planned
Sullowitz Wavre or Ligny Planned
Wehinitz Quatre Bras or Braine-l’Alleud Planned
Radositz Bierges Planned

Communication and Waterways

To link these settlements and recreate the vital Morellenbach stream, I am using the TBM 20mm Wide Track and River sets. The brown river sections are perfect for the muddy, marshy banks often found in this region.

The Road Network (20mm Wide Tracks):

  • Straight, Curve, and Junction sets for the main approaches.
  • Meandering Straight sets to represent the less formal tracks through the vineyards and hills.

The Morellenbach (River Sections - Brown):

  • 6 Narrow sections & 2 Junctions for the upper reaches.
  • 6 Medium and 6 Wide sections for the approach to the Elbe.
  • 2 Medium-to-Narrow junctions for a realistic transition in water width.

Scale and Logistics

When a 12-figure cavalry regiment or a 3-gun artillery battery is positioned near these 20mm tracks, the sense of scale is maintained perfectly. The goal is to represent the bottleneck of the Bohemian villages accurately, forcing the overall commander to make the same difficult tactical choices Frederick faced.
