Maximum Mass on a Minimal Footprint: A Review of One-Hour Wargames

Introduction: Neil Thomas’s One-Hour Wargames is neither a dense technical study of specific regiment uniforms nor a narrative chronicle of a historic campaign. Instead, it is a brilliant, design-focused manifesto targeted at the practicalities of modern hobby constraints. Thomas presents a masterclass in elegant, stripped-back rulesets across various eras alongside thirty highly replayable, generic scenarios designed to fit on a modest three-foot tabletop, promising complete tactical resolutions in under sixty minutes.

The 6mm Connection: While the rules are inherently abstract, this volume is an absolute goldmine for a Baccus 6mm project. Because Thomas restricts army sizes to just six units per side, we can substitute single multi-figure bases to represent entire forces without losing grand-tactical flavour. Our 24-figure infantry battalions, 12-figure cavalry regiments, and 3-gun artillery batteries can be deployed as the single units required by the engine. This allows us to field beautifully dense, visually stunning 18th-century linear formations that look like sweeping battle lines but handle with the speed and spatial efficiency demanded by smaller workshop tables.

Historical Insight: The true "lightbulb moment" from this text is how Thomas successfully models the distinct flavour of Horse and Musket warfare using an ultra-minimalist toolkit. By restricting the mobility of linear infantry, emphasizing the vulnerability of artillery to flanking maneuvers, and making cavalry devastating but highly brittle, the game forces you to grasp the exact tactical dilemmas faced by Frederick the Great or Field Marshal Browne. It strips away the complex rule-bloat of traditional systems to lay bare the pure, uncompromising relationship between positioning, combined arms, and spatial geometry in the Seven Years War.

Conclusion: One-Hour Wargames is an essential addition to any solitaire general's library, particularly those adapting their gaming setups due to limited time, space, or energy. By providing a vast array of fluid scenario frameworks, it vastly rounds out our tactical repertoire. It proves that you do not need an entire weekend or a massive club hall to experience a deeply satisfying, historically authentic battle, making it a perfect tool for keeping the Bohemian theatre actively marching on your own terms.

  1. I found the rules for pike and shot decent but I wanted more, too stripped back for me but it certainly does what it says on the tin and the scenario section is worth the price on its own, a veritable goldmine for the money!

    1. Spot on, Iain! You've hit the nail on the head—the scenarios alone are worth every penny and are a total goldmine for solo gaming. I completely see where you're coming from regarding the rules being ultra-stripped back.
