Reinforcements Have Arrived: Soldier King Lands from Noble Knight Games!

There is nothing quite like the feeling of an international parcel hitting the doorstep, especially when it contains a classic piece of campaign gaming history you’ve been eagerly anticipating! My boxed copy of GDW’s 1982 classic, Soldier King , officially arrived today—safely shipped over from Noble Knight Games. The components are in fantastic condition. Leafing through those vintage 1982 rulebook pages and unrolling the map sheets in person immediately brings back that great, nostalgic operational gaming aesthetic. The Inspiration Behind the Campaign I have to give a massive tip of the hat to Neil Patterson over at the Aufklarungsabteilung blog. It was reading through Neil’s fantastic posts and seeing how he integrated Soldier King into his own campaign gaming that originally hooked me on the concept. The clean map layout, simple area movement, and multi-faction dynamic make it an ideal engine for driving grand-scale strategic campaigns on the tabletop w...

Wargames Rules: Minden Rose

Designed by R.D. Shah, Minden Rose is a dedicated set of miniature wargame rules created specifically to simulate grand tactical engagements during the Seven Years' War. Taking its name from the legendary 1759 battle where Allied soldiers picked wild roses on their march into history, the system aims to recreate the tactical decisions and friction faced by senior commanders on mid-eighteenth-century battlefields.

The rules set focuses on brigade-level action, striking a balance between period flavour and streamlined table play. Rather than bogging players down in intricate individual battalion drills, Minden Rose emphasizes formation control, command activation, and the crushing impact of massed artillery and disciplined line infantry volleys. The publication features comprehensive army lists covering the primary European belligerents—such as Prussia, Austria, France, and Great Britain—alongside scenario setup guidelines that make refighting historical engagements straightforward. For the 6mm wargamer, the operational focus translates brilliantly to the tabletop, allowing vast armies to manoeuvre naturally without requiring excessive bookkeeping.

What do you think?

I would love to hear your opinion on these rules! Do you use them for the Seven Years War? How do you find they handle the 6mm scale? Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. Heard of them but never played them. As my good friend Keith Flint wrote the 'Honours of War' rules and having playtested them over the years, they are my default 18thC rules these days. Again, this post only appeared today:(.

    1. Hi Steve,

Honours of War is hard to beat—having playtested them with Keith Flint, it's no surprise they're your default set! I haven't played Minden Rose myself yet either, though the brigade-level focus looks promising. I think I completely scrambled the post dates in Blogger when setting these up, which probably explains why it only surfaced today!

      All the best, Andy
