Wargames Rules: Die Kriegskunst: Wargaming the Seven Years War

Die Kriegskunst: Wargaming the Seven Years War, designed by David Brown, Angus Konstam, and Dougie Trail, and published by Test of Battle Games in 2008, is a dedicated grand-tactical ruleset engineered specifically to recreate mid-eighteenth-century European warfare. Tailored to the conflicts of 1756–1763, the system captures the rigid linear formations, formal command hierarchies, and disciplined musket volleys of Frederickian battlefields.

The core mechanics feature an innovative command and activation structure that models the friction of mid-18th-century communications. Units represent whole regiments or brigades, making it exceptionally well-suited for refighting large historical engagements. Rather than tracking individual figure casualties, the rules focus on unit cohesion, disorder, and morale attrition. When applied to 6mm scale miniatures, the system provides a magnificent grand-tactical vista of massed battalion lines while keeping turns flowing smoothly and decisively.
